Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR), recent announcement that hundreds of millions of pounds will be pumped in to its Castle Bromwich plant to build a wide range of electric vehicles has certainly prompted wide ranging support. It also sets the tone for other manufacturers to follow suit as all automotive marques are looking to move away from traditional combustion engines.

What this means for the UK economy is that engineering firms such as ours will be well placed to supply all-important elements of powertrain systems for electric vehicles ranging from high powered race cars to small electric vehicles.

We’re already working with a number of teams in Formula E and for supercar producers where we are manufacturing either copper or aluminium busbars, which offer a more reliable electric performance as traditional cell connections can be unreliable.

We have also manufactured busbars for other engineering projects including the Large Hydron Collider, so as a business Electropak is well-placed to manufacture busbars as the demand will certainly increase as more automotive manufacturers move to electric powertrains.

The news that JLR is investing in electric is certainly an exciting development and other brands will certainly follow suit. It’s only a matter of time before at least 50 per cent of a marque’s product range will be all electric and not just hybrid.

However, the one fly in the ointment seems to be the charging infrastructure as this is currently not sufficient to cover the country and the reduction and removal of subsidies for electric vehicles. Nonetheless consumers are becoming more environmentally considerate and car manufacturers are always keen to please, plus there are more and more charging points being seen in car supermarkets, shopping centre car parks and service stations.
