Custom Busbar Fabrication
Electropak supplies custom busbars to the aerospace, rail, switchgear and electrical industries. The busbars are fabricated and or machined before being powder coated at our paint facility. Electropak manufactures busbars for OEM’s and a range of customers in the rail industry. As one of the largest UK producers of copper and cuponal busbars, Electropak offers unmatched dedication to the quality fabrication and to the exact specifications of OEMs.
The busbars we manufacture often receive tin or silver plating and then powder coated insulation. We can manufacture busbars from a range of materials such as; copper, cuponol and aluminium. Our AS9100 rev D approval enables Electropak to manufacture precision Aerospace busbars.
In electrical power distribution, a busbar (also spelled bus bar, or sometimes incorrectly as buss bar or bussbar, with the term bus being a contraction of the Latin omnibus – (meaning for all) is a strip or bar of copper, brass or aluminium that conducts electricity within a switchboard, distribution board, substation, battery bank or other electrical apparatus. Its main purpose is to conduct electricity, not to function as a structural member.
The cross-sectional size of the busbar determines the maximum amount of current that can be safely carried. Busbars can have a cross-sectional area of as little as 10 mm2 but electrical substations may use metal pipes of 50 mm in diameter (20 cm2) or more as busbars. An aluminium smelter will have very large busbars used to carry tens of thousands of amperes to the electrochemical cells that produce aluminium from molten salts.
